What I am referring to is an obligation to my "day job", one that kept me pretty inaccessible since last July. Sure, we have kept fairly busy and the group continues to put on great shows. However, behind the scenes we have been like a racehorse waiting for the gate to open, anticipating our chance to bolt forward again. That time, thank goodness, has arrived.

You will be able to see lots more attention to detail on the website, plus I hope to get a Facebook page up and running shortly. Having been a high school band director for 20 years, I never really got to "stop and the smell the roses" much during this time of the year. It is generally really busy during September with football games, parades, and marching festivals if you're associated with a high school band. Anyway, September and October in the Big Bend are great months to savor living here, and it helps to have a little more free time.

Playing as a warm-up act for Michael Salgado on September 10th was great fun. The Resonators played with all the passion we could muster, and it appeared the audience enjoyed our two sets. Thanks to the Border Patrol for inviting us to perform. We hope you guys and gals were pleased with the way the evening came out.

Once again, we have a whole new set of ears to play for coming up on September 24th in Van Horn. We'd like to thank Ruben Florez Jr. and the church committee for extending us an invitation to play. You're going to get a great show, the likes you haven't seen in a long time!

As the end of the year nears, it has been so gratifying to look back over the numerous opportunities The Resonators have had to play. The economy still keeps limping along, but people seem to have enough faith in us to justify spending the money for live entertainment. I hope that our friends that we have played for can tell that we are thankful for every opportunity we get to perform. It's been a great year so far, and we still have three months to go!

A consideration that runs parallel to our attitude about playing is our repertoire. Over the years we have evolved in our focus of music: what our audience wants. Goodness knows how many songs get tossed around as additions to our repertoire, within the band. Many times we'll get a request to do a tune from our early days, but for whatever reason we just don't play that song anymore. However those songs that repeatedly get requested, you'll probably see re-appearing in the near future (Black Velvet, This Love are two that get requested a lot). Anyway, our appeal has dramatically increased over the years as we pay more attention to what our audience really wants.

We have a couple of new additions to the face of the group that you'll be seeing more and more. First of all, Jesus Hernandez (Huevo, Eggy) will more and more be handling vocals on some of our hottest tropical repertoire. Jesus has been with us for quite some time, and we are looking forward to your feedback with him handling more of the vocals. Second, is Molly Ferguson. She'll be doing quite a bit of singing as well, freeing up Lucy to play more horn parts on our tropical music.

We hope to see you soon at an upcoming performance. It should be a blast!

It was a terrific summer. Michael Salgado show next!

I remember a while back when it looked like performance opportunities might become few and far between due to a slow economy. What transpired, though, is that we have been busier than ever, and I know why: we love to play and we share that love with our audiences! It probably doesn't hurt to be affordable and to always try to be fresh, but we are thrilled to have been able to play for as many people as we have over the past year.

We played for a wedding reception in Santa Fe, New Mexico over Labor Day weekend for some very wonderful people. They were all so friendly and in good spirits. The evening was just about as fun as it could be. We made the 21 hour round trip up there in the course of 2 days, so we were pretty tired, but glad the "church van" made it in one piece! Nothing like pouring $300 worth of gas into the tank, but I guess that's the price we pay for going on tour!

Next up is the chance to open for Michael Salgado on Friday, September 10th in Alpine. We shared a great show with him just two years ago, so we are honored to do it again. Michael is a really nice guy and he has one of the best norteno bands anywhere. I know how I feel about warm-up acts generally: I came to hear the star, not some upstarts! Therefore, we are going to pour everything we have into getting the audience revved up and make the Gallego Center one rockin' place!

Thanks for stopping by. We look forward to seeing you soon (maybe Friday!).

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://resonatorsonline.blogspot.com/2010/09/it-was-terrific-summer-michael-salgado.html' title='It was a terrific summer. If you haven't been to Padre's before, you should check it out. Owner David Beebe has created a really soulful place to eat, drink, and dance in Padre's. And if you want to catch The Resonators live in the Big Bend, we can't recommend this place too highly. Before the show, give yourself some time to enjoy some of the delicious fare. So far I've had a bowl of chili and a burger, both of which were great!

Like I said, the band is playing great, and each show is a privilege to be able to put on. Whether it be the extraordinary vocals of Lucy or Alfredo, Marty and Tony ripping it up on guitar, or Taro calling upon his encyclopaedic knowledge of music of Western civilization, getting to be on stage with these guys (and gal) is a treat. We hope you'll enjoy...

July 4th in Alpine, Texas

The Resonators will fill the evening air with a broad spectrum of music this July 4th at Kokernot Park in Alpine, Texas. As always, The Resonators will be "pumped" to play a show in front of the locals, but having Brian Burns in town doing his very own Texas country should be a treat.

A Stage With A View

Have you ever had a room with a view? I remember vacationing in Mazatlan and staying at the old Hotel Belmar. Although the hotel is in a slow state of decay, the oceanview rooms are well worth the $45 per night. Especially, I remember waking up in the middle of the night and seeing a full moon setting over the Pacific. Magic.

Every once in a while The Resonators will play a gig in extraordinary locales, as well. Cibolo Creek Ranch, Padre's, and The Granada Theatre come to mind. These settings didn't achieve their special flavor by accident, though. Through a mix of business savvy, attention to numerous details, and lots of money, these west Texas institutions are truly noteworthy.

Living in the Big Bend, any time you can be outdoors, it's the same kind of powerful effect. We just got through playing an engagement at the employee residences at Panther Junction in Big Bend. The gig was held on an outdoor basketball court on a rather chilly February evening. Now before I go any further, answer this question: Have you been to Big Bend National Park? If not, you may not understand where I'm going with this. If so, it will make perfect sense.

Playing in The Resonators is the best. Playing in The Resonators with the Dead Horse Mountains and Sierra del Carmens in the bakground just can't be beat. I told you so. If you've ever been to Big Bend, the imagery is unforgettable. The gig itself was a great one. We're embarking on a string of engagements that are almost weekly until July, so getting in the playing time will have a positive impact on the songbag. For the first time, we did El Taconazo, Borrachera, and Cotton-Eyed Joe. With The Pig coming up on Friday, I'm certain there'll be some wood-shedding of even more tunes.

Hey, it's almost time for the voyage up to Denver to pick up my eBay van! I only paid $1345 for the monster, so I hope it's not too much of a clunker. I just keep getting these Partidge Family visions in my head of all the band piled into the van and off we merrily go to the next gig. Of course that fantasy could have several optional endings, like driving down the highway in July with no air conditioning, or worse yet: stranded on the side of the highway. We'll just have to see. My $5000 eBay equipment truck hasn't let me down so far.

Thanks for visiting!

2010 Starts off busy, then we're back!

So we played a couple of gigs right after Christmas, and both went very well. Great people to play for and the band responded with spirited performances. Once the dust settled, it was time to get back to our "day jobs" and begin a new year. It seemed like things couldn't get any busier than they had been during the closing weeks of 2009--wrong! From the beginning of January until mid-February it just got unbelievably busy once again. So busy that The Resonators never gathered again under one roof until February 14. But that gathering was worth the wait....

We had been asked to play a Valentine's Day dinner show at a soulful place here in Presidio called The Enlightened Bean. Gathered together for the gig were Taro, Alfredo, Manolo, Lucy and John. Our set list was full of some really nice tunes, and they were performed very tastefully. Usually The Resonators blow the roof off volume-wise, but this occasion called for a little restraint. In the end, patrons and the restaurant owners alike seemed to be having a terrific time, and that's essentially what every performance should boil down to. Good job, Enlightened Bean, on putting together a very soulful evening of food and music down here on the border.

On Saturday, February 20 The Resonators played at Padre's in Marfa, Texas for the very first time. WOW! How a place like this can open up and find its groove so quickly is really impressive. Whether it be the ambience, the decor, the food, the management, or the patrons, this place is off to a really great start. We had to first play a short mariachi show--also in Marfa--and Padre's owner was very understanding about getting in a soundcheck once we finished up with Mariachi Santa Cruz.

The patrons who were present (A LOT, by the way) kind of felt us out for the first 30 minutes or so, then with the ice-breaker with the lovely Pam Gaddis, everyone decided the "water was OK." From then on, it was a big pachanga until 12:30 AM. The band filled up every square inch of the stage, as "Eggy" Jesus Hernandez was able to join us on Latin percussion. I love these guys (and gal, especially)! What an immense privilege to be able to play in The Resonators!

Next up: practice! We have about a boat-load-and-a-half of new material we want to start playing. We just need to have a few free minutes to actually be in the same place together. Looking forward to the next gig!

See you soon!

Looking forward to 2010

The Resonators will put 2009 to bed with a couple of private parties coming up. Traditionally we perform in public at New Year's Eve, but this year we will be playing for a wedding party, so come catch us next at Padre's in Marfa on February 20th.

Looking back over this past year, a few notable things come to mind. First, in spite of a really tough economy, we managed to keep playing fairly steadily. That's saying something because when so many national institutions were on the brink, somehow many people felt it was still important enough to have live music. Second, we successfully played a high school prom, which was a pleasant surprise. I guess between playing a good show and having Manolo DJ the rest was just the right combination. And finally, we welcomed Alfredo Santana to the band as our new bassist. Alfredo is the kind of musician that any band would welcome: great player, terrific singer, and a real good guy.

So how will 2010 distinguish itself? Let me make a few predictions:

The band will have its best year ever (to date). We'll all be a year older and wiser-- emphasis on the wiser part.

Our song list will have several new additions.

A recording.

Our territory will expand to a 250 mile radius (Midland/Odessa, El Paso , southern New Mexico, and Chihuahua).

It's so easy to be a self-promoter and forecast a rosy scenario, but the way things are going, we will have no problem making this all a reality. The mood within the band is that we want to challenge ourselves and always look for ways to grow. Essentially, it boils down to desire, and you, the listener, will be the judge if this is merely hype, or if 2010 really will be something special.

Have a happy holiday and a great new year!

Resonators at Padre's in 2010

Although it may still be a couple of months away, we are excited to tell everyone that we will make our first appearance at Padre's in Marfa, Texas on February 20, 2010. Padre's is an establishment that books live music, and you can grab a bite to eat while you're there, too. Venues like Padre's and Railroad Blues are, without a doubt, THE places in far West Texas to showcase what you can do as a band. For our fans who will be joining us at Padre's, plan on partying 'til you drop. This could be one of our best shows ever. Thanks very much to David Beebe for giving us the opportunity to play at Padre's.

The Resonators will be practicing on Taro's back patio on Sunday at 1:00-3:00 PM, so stop by!

Nos vemos! "Thankfully" everything has been real quiet and relaxing. I did loan a fellow musician from Chihuahua some sound equipment so that he could entertain diners at Las Palapas de Aldama, an incredible seafood restaurant here in town. Yesterday I also attended a quinceanera mass in Ojinaga and really enjoyed hearing the choir sing. There are at least two members of the choir who perform in Acuario 90, so the singing was inspiring. Then later we went to the quinceanera and heard Quinta Banda (5ta Banda), a tambora group from Chihuahua. They played well, although I can only take that type of music in smaller doses.

I have a personal blog I started a while back called My Presidio, Texas Dreamworld. It's sometimes my take on things Presidio, and at others, just some rambling thoughts.

Behind the scenes

It seems like the music scene here in Presidio/OJ is feeling the effects of the economic downturn, with nary a paying gig in November. Not even our buds from Revane are playing, and they're just a duo (read "cheap"). But certainly not to worry because we are using the time to augment and polish our repertoire. We have a couple of pretty important private parties coming up in December, and we want everyone to leave at the end with their socks blown off. Once the Resonators come up for air in a public venue, you're going to be impressed.

For the fans of old school Tejano, how about a few covers of Augustin Ramirez or Sunny Ozuna? For the "quince" age group we'll be rolling out some material that may permanently alter the image of the band unlike anything we've done before. We're talking the next chapter of the band's story! All in all, we're really excited about seeing everyone again, and the music will definitely do a better job of speaking for itself than I could ever write here.

As far as the "behind the scenes" title of this posting is concerned, I wanted to share a few details of how the band gets to the point where it's ready to put on a show:

Rehearsals: Alternate between Taro's back yard in OJ and John and Lucy's "music room" at their house in Presidio.

Equipment: Owned mainly by the John. Expensive! One decent mic cable will run about $25. We normally need around 20 mic cables or more for a show. You do the math...

Equipment truck: Owned by John. A 1995 GMC box truck bought off eBay from a guy in Colorado Springs, CO. An excellent vehicle, other than a bad radio and slips out of reverse all the time.

Musical arrangements: Mostly done by John using a vintage Scorewriter program. The plan is: 1) Take the kids trick-or-treating, 2) Stay in costume, and 3) Get thyself to Ojinaga and party hearty with Los Resonadores! The crowds at these events are always good, plus they love free entertainment.

For those of you who are really into "Saturday In The Park", guess what? Chicago is in concert in Chihuas (Chihuahua City) on Saturday, October 17th and it's free! I just might have to get myself a room at the San Francisco, seek out a groovy dinner, then go soak up a legendary band. The concert is at El Palomar, which is walking distance from downtown.

Nos vemos!

An American neither here nor there

One of the most distinct qualities of a Resonators performance set list is that it is ever-changing. Because the group is diverse, and playing in settings ranging from wedding parties, to community celebrations, to high school proms, we never even come close to settling in on a collection of songs that are repeated in a specific order. I sometimes wish we would come up with a set list that doesn't change much, but it would not serve us well at all. There's nothing quite like a gig that includes "Summertime", "500 Novillos", and "Pride and Joy". Or a set list minus any Spanish music at all (Remember that we are on the border!).

Considering this, deciding on what kind of new material to bring aboard is not to be taken lightly. For a white boy raised in the DFW Metroplex in the 70's and 80's, I think I do respectably when it comes to a relative command of musical literature that works for a dance band straddling both sides of the border. If you were wondering what I mean, start with the American side of our repertoire: classic rock, rock-n-roll oldies, soul and R&B, country, and some easy listening for the digestive process. Now let's take a look at the Spanish language side: cumbia, Tejano, nortena, bolero, cha-cha-cha, mambo, and danzon. If you were to ask me three years ago about some of the Spanish music, I wouldn't have been of much help. Fortunately, when the band evolved into a 50/50 mix of ethnicities, the musical floodgates opened up. I think--no, I know--that this revelation of new musical styles has gone both ways in the band.

So now The Resonators have this treasure trove of music from which to select. Pick your decade, starting in about the 1940's and move forward. If the requested song falls within that time frame, it may very well be something we should consider knowing. Other than a few genres that would obviously not work too well for us (speed metal, hard core rap, etc.), we're game for giving most music a try, if that is what the audience is asking for. This very specific aspect of flexibility is what makes The Resonators a sought-after band in west Texas.

Strangely enough, my favorite music that The Resonators perform is Latin. Give me salsa, cumbias, and mambos any day of the week. Of course, this has nothing to do with the fact that the trumpet figures prominently in all three of these genres... Now if I could just retool my vocabulary in order that I could proficiently compose lyrics in Spanish!

Most of us that once-upon-a-time played in the school band, and even fewer who continued on in college pretty much are relegated to playing in the local community band, jazz ensemble, or church orchestra as mature adults. A very elite few made it as a career performing. I feel very fortunate that I get to play like I do. It's not a full-time, lucrative type of performing, but it is a lot of fun. If I weren't playing those cumbias and mambos, I doubt I'd be playing in a group at all. All things considered, living out in the middle of nowhere, I play quite a bit, and I'm pretty sure the demand for our music will just go up.

Here are some tunes making their way through the works and may be heard soon:

Lo Que Yo Tengo

El Cafetal/Machaca

Let's Stay Together

Speaking of, come see us on the following dates:

October 10th, Free Street Dance in downtown Presidio

October 31, Sabados en el Parque, Ojinaga

And after the mariachis finished...

Well I'm not saying that our Mariachi Santa Cruz is bad luck or anything, but we've had a couple of "what happened next" experiences right after mariachi performances recently that might make you wonder...

It all began at the Marfa Lights Festival on September 6th. Mariachi Santa Cruz played a one-hour set as part of a scheduled four-hour engagement we had to close the festival. The crowd was great, the setting perfect, but with just a few grey clouds rolling in... Hmm, was that a raindrop I just..yep, it sure was. Uh-oh there's some more. And as we played the final note of the final cancion, the heavens opened up with a rousing downpour.

Thirty drenched minutes later the skies cleared and the glorious sun came back out. Unfortunately the sound people felt it was unsafe to "turn the juice back on," and the day came to a premature end. The good news is that we rescheduled that gig for Sunday, September 27th, this time at Vizcaino Park (Marfa). It's free and the time is friendly to the whole family: 5:00-8:00 PM.

Okay, so we played another mariachi gig on "lucky" September 13th in Presidio, along with the La Rondalla de CeTIS 98 (Ojinaga), Ballet Folklorico de UACH (Chihuahua), and some other very terrific musicians from Chihuahua. It was the "Grito de Independencia"--Presidio-style-- held in the parking lot of a defunct grocery store. Mexican Consul Hector Raul Acosta organized the event and did his customary GREAT JOB. A wonderful evening in the old town of Presidio.

A few days later--on Thursday the 17th--we had yet another mariachi gig near Marathon, this time with several students from Presidio High. Once again, the setting was unmatched and with very gracious hosts. The gig went quite well, but rather late. Nevertheless, we arrived safely back in Presidio at 2:30 AM. It was a long day, but a good one.

After crawling in the sack, not more than an hour into La La Land, my tummy-tum-tum awakened me. Living on la frontera, this is not unusual because we eat food on both sides of the border. Sometimes it's spicy, maybe a tad greasy, or who knows why? Anyway, so I have a humdinger of a stomach ache, only this time my side hurts. Oh no, not my kidney! (Family history.) Long story, short: yeah, it was. Miraculously, by Sunday afternoon it was all over. Three little stones kind of doing the "Fantastic Voyage" through "that" part of my body. No fun, but thank goodness it wasn't any worse.

Hey but if this is the worst of my luck, then I'm not doing too bad at all.

Come see us this Sunday, September 27, in Marfa!

Tour 2009: Ft. Stockton and Pecos

That motley bunch of border musicians from the Texas Big Bend and Ojinaga--you know them as The Resonators--just wrapped up their 2009 tour with rave reviews. With an early Friday morning departure on August 14th, the band blazed a musical trail across the expansive Trans-Pecos region of Texas, logging 410 miles, crossing numerous county lines, and bringing economic development to countless eateries, Wal-Marts, and budget hotels. When the group finally rolled back home, we--in our own individual ways--basked in the glow of two triumphant gigs in two days. Wow! I guess it's time to get on eBay and see if there are any tour buses (in the $1000-2000 range) on sale to meet our incredible travel needs which most surely will follow...

Well, actually the two gigs were very cool, and hopefully we'll be playing out and about more often. We played the 2009 Roadrunner Biker Rally in Ft. Stockton on Friday--a first for us. The outdoor venue was excellent, the weather, perfect, and the folks attending lots of fun to play for. Great success! We're hoping to play again next year. Thanks to Joe Schuster and Manny Rodriguez for having us play.

The the tour continued to its final leg in Pecos. One word: PARTY! The band was on and the wedding party was eager to have a great time Saturday night. After all was said and done, it was one more reason to be grateful that we do what we do. We discovered a great restaurant called "El Rodeo" the next morning. Mmm-mmm good! A great time in Pecos.

Tomorrow it's back to school, at least for teachers. Looking forward to working with Lucy, Taro, Julia and Juanito keeping the music alive and well in Presidio.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://resonatorsonline.blogspot.com/2009/08/tour-2009-ft-stockton-and-pecos.html' title='Tour 2009: Ft. Most importantly, we have had a pretty good run of gigs. We have also had the usual rocky moments a lot of groups go through, but we survived them and are probably stronger for it. One interesting note that has probably been most surprising is how we have continued to line up playing opportunities in spite of the shaky economy. I don't know what exactly to attribute this to, but I'm thankful we still play as much as we do.

Playing at The Granada in Alpine during Fiesta del Sol was a treat. The facility is terrific, plus you get Mark Pollock to run sound. Then we played for the Presidio July 4th. Other than a power glitch midway through the evening, it was a "blast" to entertain the locals. After a little time off, we played a very satisfying party for a nice bunch of folks in Marfa on August 1st. Next up is a motorcycle rally In Ft. Stockton on August 14th--a first for the band. Just like playing for the prom back in May, hopefully we'll have the right stuff. We're sure gonna try!

Fiesta del Sol

A highlight of The Resonators' summer performance calendar is the upcoming Fiesta del Sol in Alpine. The gig will happen at the Granada starting at 8:00 PM, so we'll see you there! If you haven't seen a show at the Granada, it's one of the classiest performance venues around, plus it's smoke-free. Mark Pollock--music biz heavy-hitter extraordinaire--will run sound for us, so we'll be good to go.

Last Friday we played a great show at Railroad Blues. Leading up to the gig we had a ride snafu that was--at the time--pretty unnerving. In a nutshell, Taro, Chino, and Manolo went straight to Alpine, while Lucy, Marty, and I waited in Presidio for them. After two and a half hours passed, we guessed they had gone on their own, which they had. Planning to arrive at the Blues by 5:30, we finally rolled in at 8:00 PM. After hashing it all out, it was determined that the ride arrangements got lost in communication. All in all, I guess you could say it was a scary afteroon wondering what was going on, but it really did seam to get the adrenaline flowing for the show.

Saturday we played a party at La Cienega (Cibolo Crek Ranch). The gig, again, went very well, but not until we spent an hour trying to figure out which ranch gate we were supposed to use. Nothing like staring at a picturesque ranch (with camels!) and knowing you have a job to play, but wondering how everyone else got in, except us! It's definitely summertime in Presidio.

The Presidio schools have their act together, offering summer school to students who need it, plus enrichment and work programs for any others who are interested. Outside of not having a city swimming pool (and that's a major deficiency!), kids shouldn't have many reasons to be bored. Thanks to Presidio Schools superintendent Dennis McEntire for spearheading these activities for our youth.

The community will celebrate July 4th with a free street dance and fireworks. The Resonators will play and the volunteer fire department will handle the fireworks. Everything will happen downtown, starting at sundown.

Other than that, gotta love that oven heat which is Presidio summertime! Actually the summer for us started around May 1st (and a few selected days in April). If you've never been to Presidio when it's hot, you should come visit. Presidio is one of those places known for being really hot. We don't sunbathe here. In fact we take cover under the closest rock and don't come out until around 7:00 PM. Now if you want to know what extreme heat feels like, go to Phoenix or Death Valley. Believe it or not, there are places that get even hotter than Presidio.

Our summers stretch easily until mid-September, with warm days lasting until late October. Usually the September 16th celebration in Mexico coincides with the beginning of cooler evenings.

Enjoy your summer wherever you are!

We Came, We Saw, We Kicked Some....

For those of you who may have read my previous post, The Resonators pulled it off at the high school prom recently. While not nearly as hip as Daddy Yankee, or with as dazzling a light show as Madonna, the music remained the key to our listeners' enjoyment--and enjoy, they did! Not bad for a bunch of middle-aged guys and a gal. Even though I've been involved in music for 37 years, I'm still learning news tricks in the music business. A couple of the tricks that are so obvious are effective lighting of the dance floor and budgeting for party favors (balloons, party hats, etc). With those two--and good music--you can't lose.

So here comes summer, and the band has no plans to languish in the dog days. We've got a few gigs set, plus probably a few more to be added soon. We're looking forward to the company of a young musician named Benjamin Vega. This kid's a real music lover. He plays Latin percussion, drums, and is an excellent singer. Hopefully we can put him to good use. In addition, we may see the return of Juanito Dominguez every now and then. And if that doesn't get you going, I'm in the process of growing our horn section into a quartet, by adding a second sax. My heart is beating faster just thinking about the possibilities!

Also over the summer, we hope to add material that will hopefully make our shows even better. We've had some requests to bring back some tunes Lucy sang once upon a time (Black Velvet, This Love, Game of Love, etc.), so we're going to try and work them back into the mix. In addition, Marty wants to do a few rock guitar tunes which we know you'll like. Then finally, we're working on some dance music that will always bring the house down, so we've got our hands full.

Take care and I hope to see you at our next show.

Presidio High School Prom: some thoughts

The next Resonators gig is one that most of our fans won't get to take in, but it's worth mentioning: a high school prom. Yes, we actually have the opportunity to do our thing in front of an audience (read: teenagers) that don't know a whole lot about us. Recently we played a quinceanera ( a sort of Mexican "sweet 16") that went very well, so I think that we have the material to keep the party-goers hoppin'. Often, though, when you're the "home-town" (fill in the blank), it's not nearly as cool as if you came from 200 miles away.

The Resonators have been around for over five years, now, and it's interesting to consider where we've been. The group basically began with musical inspiration coming mainly from Los Lobos and The Blazers. We started in a little tool shed at a rent house in Alpine. Soon thereafter we move rehearsals to another tool shed at another rent house, also in Alpine. The only difference was we added Lucy to the group, with accompanying material that had her on vocals. We slowly began to build a fan base, playing just about any gig we could.

We won a 2nd place at a "Battle of The Bands" in Odessa in 2004. The judges were really impressed, but they openly admitted they couldn't categorize our music. I guess when you play a set of Average White Band, Santana, and Pedro Fernandez, it might be a little tough to put your finger on it!

From 2004-2007 the band continued to emphasize a Latin rock sound, with as many cumbias and polkas thrown in as we could think of. At this time, we were mainly playing in Alpine, so our forays into dance halls wanting music heavy on cumbias, Tejano and country, were met with polite, but not real rave reviews.

In the spring of 2007, due to some changes in the band line-up, the band's direction also changed. Along with what we started with, we also really tried to bring in music for folks who were wanting some country. This, along with more emphasis on Mexican dance music seemed to be the right mix for the band. In the end, it was about pleasing our audience.

Along the road these past five years have been many highs and a few definite lows, but I'd like to think we're moving forward and giving folks a reason to want to hear us play. We've had opportunities to learn from some other great bands along the way, so we hope we can transform all this into something worth coming to see the next time we play for you.

Lets see what the kids say at the prom...

Alpine times 3

May 2nd will find The Resonators in Alpine at the annual 5 de Mayo Fest. We've played this festival several times, and it's a blast! Alpine is where we got our start once upon a time, and playing there is always a privilege and a pleasure. The band is really playing well lately, and just the thought of playing for the 5 de Mayo Fest will bring out our best. Immediately after the gig we'll metamorphose into Mariachi Santa Cruz for a great set of fun mariachi fare.

Hey, and whaddaya know? We're back at Railroad Blues on June 12th! The Blues is always the venue where we can play to our hearts' content, so it's awesome to have a date with Richard, RC, and the rest of the Blues family coming up soon.

As if that weren't enough, then we return to the stage at the Granada on June 20th as part of Fiesta del Sol. Mark Pollock was gracious enough to invite us to perform in this wonderful venue, so we shall not disappoint!

Local home-grown talent

Our local Presidio High School tuba phenom, Uriel Uranga, just made Texas All State Band for the third time. He's never had a problem with his head fitting through the door, plus he makes damn-good grades, too. Let's hope that he spreads the love at college next year. Felicidades, Uriel!

And while we're talking about the next generation, it's getting close to the time when Molly and Max will take the stage with The Resonators. We'll share the evening with Generacion X, and maybe even our young proteges, Conjunto Promesa. With a line-up like this, no one gets left out of the fun. We did indeed perform at the Ojinaga Fiestas on June 1st. Seems like everyone around except the band knew that we were going to play, and as it turns out, they were right. We ended up putting on a three hour show and some of us got on some of the carnival rides to close out the evening. Mexican carnivals are a lot of fun, by the way.

Speaking of having fun, el circo came to Ojinaga last week. The name of this outfit is Circus Barley and they put on about the best show money can buy. A lot of people consider Presidio to be at the end of the earth, but they forget that OJ is just across the border. We have more things going on between our two cities than you'd think!

OK, so here comes July 5th. Come see us in Presidio as we celebrate Independence Day. Like I said, it's really hot right now down in La Junta, so we'll wait until about at least 9:00 PM to crank up the party. Admission is free, but bring a lawn chair. Food and drinks will be sold.

Sunday, July 6th, Mariachi Santa Cruz will be performing at the zocalo in Ojinaga at around 8:00 PM. Mariachi music anyone?

On the following Saturday, July 12th, The Resonators will put on a free show at El Parque in downtown OJ. Again a free show, and a great way to soak up the local culture. Should start around 9:00 PM.

Summer of 2008 arrives!

Thanks for stopping by to catch up on the latest Resonators news. We've recently completed several performances including the Cinco de Mayo shows in Presidio and Alpine, plus a reunion dance for the Presidio schools. Then on May 25th we played for a terrific wedding party at Cibolo Creek Ranch (If you've never heard of Cibolo Creek Ranch, it is a hidden gem in far West Texas.).

Summer plans right now are a bit tenative, but you can catch us in Presidio on July 5th. Hopefully we might line up a show at Ojinaga's June Feria, so stay tuned. We won't be playing in Alpine this July 4th, but wish Kendall and the rest of The Distractions all the best as they play there this year. For June 14th and 15th we are talking with an individual in Odessa about playing, but this has not been confirmed.

We'll round out the summer with a show in Marfa on Labor Day weekend.

Stay tuned for more shows as they are added.

Nos vemos!

Resonators on May 3rd and 4th

We hope to see you on May 3rd in Presidio at Santa Teresa Catholic Church's Cinco de Mayo celebration. Seemingly far-flung and remote, there is plentiful talent to to be found in both of our cities, and two recent events gave deserved recognition for this.

On March 26th, Conjunto Primavera celebrated 30 years of making music by staging a free concert for Ojinaga at the Centro Deportiva. Over 15 bands--including The Resonators--lent a helping hand by keeping the concert going 14 hours straight. Congratulations to Conjunto Primavera and thanks for inviting The Resonators to be a part of your celebration.

Two days later, Presidio held its 1st Annual Binational Arts Festival, organized by Laurie Holman, art teacher at Presidio High School. The purpose for the event was to showcase local artistic--both visual and performing--talent. The festival was completely supported by volunteer help, and in the end, was a tremendous success. Without going into great detail, the festival showcased much local talent in the form of artists, dancers, orators, and musicians. Once again, The Resonators were fortunate to be a part of the program and we thank Laurie for inviting us. Thanks also to Muela de Juicio, Porch Overview, Celula Enferma, and the Sergio Villa Group for rocking out all afternoon as well. You guys done good!

We'll see everyone very soon.

The Resonators (aka Los Resoneiros)

Presidio Binational Arts Festival schedule

The 1st Annual Presidio Binational Arts Festival schedule for music on March 29th is as follows:

12:00 PM- Rondalla and trova music

1:00 PM- Muela de Juicio (rock band from Ojinaga and Presidio)

2:00 PM- Poetry, oratory, and dance

3:00 PM- Porch Overview (rock band from Alpine)

4:00 PM- Local bands from Presidio

5:00 PM- Celula Enferma (rock band from Ojinaga)

6:00 PM- Mariachis

7:00 PM- Local music groups from Presidio

8:00 PM- Street dance featuring The Resonators

The entire festival is free. Late March is just before our hot weather revs up, so it ought to be nice. Just to be fair, sometimes it can get windy and gross, too! Musical acts will range from local student performances, to Mexican dance (and maybe theatre?), to a wide range of area musicians. And it's all free!

If you follow The Resonators, be ready for the usual new and varied tunes, including some brand new original numbers. The show will begin at 8:00 PM and end at midnight. Bring a lawn chair, but we won't mind if you decide to dance all night instead!

The fun continues! Mariachi Santa Cruz will entertain with charreada music. Could be interesting! Call 432-661-0600 for more details regarding time and how to get there.

Tuesday, November 20th at the 20 de noviembre desfile in Ojinaga. Mariachi Santa Cruz will be on a float with our new addition, Jesus "Chente" Martinez singing on horseback. Only in Mexico! Ajuua!

Thursday, November 22nd at Nuestro Padre Jesus Church. Mariachi Mass for Santa Cecilia's Day (patron saint of music). 7:00 AM. Music in the zocalo afterwards.

Friday, November 23rd at Railroad Blues--the home of the best live music anywhere. A privilege to be on their calendar, and we'll give it all we have.

Not bad for living out in the middle of nowhere!

Many thanks to Dora and everyone else who organized the benfit dance last Friday. Yet another awesome rug-cutting gathering! It was very cool sharing the stage with Los Nortenos. Good guys!

Thanks for stopping by. It was a freebie all the way around, but the good vibes going around Parque Manuel Ojinaga were priceless!

We hope to see you this coming Saturday night, November 10th in Presidio at La Riviera Bar. The show begins at 9:00 PM and ends at 1:00 AM. Not enough can good can be said of Rafael Carrera's efforts to bring live music to Presidio, so we are delighted to have been asked to play.

Dora Lopez, of Mariachi Santa Cruz fame, has organized a dance to benefit Sonia Sanchez of Presidio. Sonia is a lifelong resident of Presidio and is known and loved by all of us. Currently she is receiving treatment for cancer, and maintaining her job at the post office at the same time. To help with her expenses, Los Norteños and The Resonators will play a benefit dance at Benito Hall in Presidio on Friday, November 16th. Please make plans to attend! The cause is very worthy and the music will be second-to-none.

Mariachi Santa Cruz will enter as a parade float in Ojinaga's 20 de noviembre parade, this year on Tuesday. There absolutely will be no other live music in the parade, so get yourself there pronto! It's a wonderful parade, well worth your time.

And finally, mix a little music into your Thanksgiving starting the day off with a mariachi mass in Ojinaga. The occasion is the celebration of Santa Cecilia, the patron saint of music. Who else would expect to be playing other than Mariachi Santa Cruz? The exact time will be posted at a later date, but we're excited to be a part of this celebration.

Come see us this Saturday!

Get ready for Sabado En El Parque; new gig on November 10th

The Resonators will close out Ojinaga's weekly "Sabado En El Parque" performance series for 2007 this coming November 3rd. It's already cooling down in these parts, so bring a sweater or jacket. The show will begin at 7:00 PM and will feature music Resonators fans keep coming back for. Because OJ is the "capital" of Norteno music, a group like The Resonators is a striking change of pace, playing lots of rock, soul, country, as well as many great Spanish-language hits. The show will last two hours, leaving everyone time to go grab a burrito afterwards.

New gig! Rafael Carrera, owner of La Riviera Bar in Presidio, Texas has booked The Resonators for November 10th. If you haven't seen a Resonators show in Presidio, specifically at La Riviera, you need to make a road trip down. La Riviera is a really cool dance hall and always plays host to a friendly, party-loving crowd. The show will begin at 9:00 PM.

We hope to see you soon!

A couple of great November gigs coming up

First off, a big "thanks" to the organizing committee at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Alpine for having us play on October 6th. From the band, we can truthfully say that the show was one of our best ever, plus it was a blast to see everyone out on the dance floor enjoying themselves so much. Good times!

We'll be playing a couple of private parties coming up during October, and then return to the general public for a couple of gigs worth catching in November.

On Saturday, November 3rd we will be at Parque Manuel Ojinaga in Ojinaga. If you've never been to OJ (the local nickname for Ojinaga), this gig will be a good enough reason to venture across the border. It is free and will surely be lots of fun. To get there, cross the bridge and go straight ahead to the first stop sign (cross street is Gustavo Dominguez). Turn right at the stop sign and then go straight until you reach Parque Manuel Ojinaga. It'll be at the top of the hill.

On November 23rd The Resonators will perform at Railroad Blues in Alpine. 'Nuff said about that. We all know that if you want to catch the best in live music--especially this side of Austin--you head to Railroad Blues.

We hope to see you soon!

Another great outdoor dance in the Big Bend: Alpine

Come join The Resonators on October 6th at the Our Lady of Peace 2007 Church Bazaar Dance in Alpine, Texas. The location is on south 5th Street, "up on the hill."

Once again "Mariachi Santa Cruz with Dora Lopez" will get things started with a 45 minute set of boleros, valses, and sones. For the first time Lucio Medina will take center stage, singing "De Que Manera Te Olvido" and "Que De Raro Tienes." If you haven't heard "Mariachi Santa Cruz with Dora Lopez" yet, you're in for a real treat! The group will begin playing at 8:30 PM.

Once The Resonators take the stage, it'll be a non-stop dance party until 1:00 AM! For this show, expect the band to pull out it's best dance tunes ranging from cumbias, polkas, country, and some fun rock-n-roll oldies! Thanks to the committee for asking us to play; we're ready to party with y'all!

Ojinaga, September 15th...Mariachi Santa Cruz!

The gig is on! Come see Mariachi Santa Cruz play at the zocalo (town square) in Ojinaga on Saturday, September 15, 2007. This event is basically Mexico's equivalent to our July 4th. There will be LOTS of people, food booths, the Presidente Municipal reciting the "Grito de Independencia" (Viva Mexico!), fireworks, plus entertainment. Mariachi Santa Cruz will perform at 9:00 PM, but expect that time to be subject to fluctuations in the event schedule (The party will basically get going at sundown.).

If you've never been to this event, you might want to make this year's celebration a first. Ojinaga is relatively easy to navigate. After crossing the border, drive straight ahead several blocks to Trasvina y Retes. At this intersection turn right and head north until you get close to the zocalo (square). It will be crowded and congested so be prepared to park about two or three blocks away. OJ time is one hour behind Presidio, but as long as you're there by sundown you'll see practically everything.

We hope you can make it!

Thanks Marfa! And many thanks to everyone who came out to Vizcaino Park on September 2nd. We sure hope you liked the show. It was a pleasure and a privilege being there with you. Hopefully we'll see everyone on New Year's Even at the Marfa Activity Center.

On Friday John and Taro will meet with members of the organizing committee of the September 16th festivities in Ojinaga. We're hopeful that Mariachi Santa Cruz (alias "The Resonators") will be able to perform for all the folks of Ojinaga on Saturday, September 15th during the activities leading to the traditional "grito". Whether it be the folks who placed their trust in us and gave us a chance to play, or the many people who responded so favorably to our performances, we thank you.

Not coincidentally, many aspects of our recent success are reflected in the hard work of everyone in the band. The collection of talent in the band spans a geographic area stretching more than 300 miles, plus an international border. There is no Resonator performance in which at least one member must put the gig ahead of financial gain. Regardless, the desire to make music makes it worth the pain.

Thanks to Railroad Blues for having us on August 4th. So I guess we can say we're internationally known now!

Anyway, the audience was very appreciative and really wanted to rock! Dora Lopez joined us onstage and belted out an hour's worth of mariachi tunes to kick the evening off. Yes, you read correctly---mariachi! The Resonators now have an alter-ego named Mariachi Santa Cruz (named for Sierrita Santa Cruz just outside Ojinaga). We'll be taking engagements in the area, with Lucy joining John on trumpet, Taro on keyboard/accordion, Marty and Chino on vihuela, and Mario and Tony on guitars, and a fabulous young guitarron player, Jose Guevara. Dora will be featured singer, but expect the guys to chime in from time to time, as well.

Back to The Resonators. Our goal for the summer is to shore up our tunes we've featured over the past years, plus continue to add new music. You'll get a chance to hear us in Presidio (June 30th) and Alpine on July 4th. Like never before, you will be impressed! It's all great fun to play, and we feel you'll like, too.

Bye, for now.

Upcoming shows

Greetings from The Resonators! Next show is February 17th in Marfa.

I have a confession. I was getting really nervous a couple of weeks before we played Railroad Blues, mainly because we had to break in a brand new drummer with no experience playing with us at all. It certainly didn't help that we (the band) physically couldn't get together due to inclement weather for almost two weeks. Then finally we got a chance to "ensayar" as Taro puts it. Three "ensayos" later, it was time to unveil the newest incarnation of The Resonators at Railroad Blues. At the drumset was our new pal Fefe, and Huevo on Latin percussion. I guess it's OK to worry about having things ready; the final product definitely was worth it!

Sure hope everyone had a fun time Friday at Railroad Blues. The chemistry on stage couldn't have been better. And the really cool part is that this new lineup is committed to continuing our tradition of keeping the music fresh. We'll have some Mardi Gras fun in store when we play in Marfa on February 17th. Maybe a little New Orleans jazz is in order for far west Texas? Well whatever the case, we're excited to have the chance to play for the good folks in Marfa. More info on that gig real soon.

Thanks again for coming to see us last Friday. The Blues is such a driving force behind a flourishing live music scene out here in the Big Bend, and they appreciate your patronage. Hope to play there again real soon! Take care, everyone.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://resonatorsonline.blogspot.com/2007/02/railroad-blues-was-blast-next-show-is.html' title='Railroad Blues was a blast! See you on February 2nd at Railroad Blues.

Where did 2006 go? Wow! It definitely was a year of change as we said 'adios' to Terry Davidson and Jerry Castellano. But it's funny how things go; Jerry will soon be back, replacing Frank Rodriguez, who moved to San Antonio. In addition, our good friend Carlos Franco has enrolled at UT San Antonio, but assures us he'll be glad to sit in on our gigs this summer. Also look for Fe-Fe to join us onstage at the Blues on February 2nd. Fe-Fe is an awesome latin percussionist who plays with Las Meras Cuerdas.

If you made it this far into the blog, you're definitely a fan! Please spread the word about our February 2nd gig. It's on a Friday and if we bring in a good crowd, you'll see us more often at The Blues. There is nowhere else in a 250 mile radius that supports live music like Railroad Blues, and The Resonators might not even exist if we didn't have it to play at. So you bring yourself and some friends, and we'll have our usual four hours crammed with as much great music as we can play! Nos vemos en Alpine!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://resonatorsonline.blogspot.com/2007/01/happy-2007-see-you-on-february-2nd-at.html' title='Happy 2007! We faced some pretty stiff competition from the chili cook-offs, but the turn-out was still great. And what a night! New member Taro Gutierrez (keyboards) was all the rage, with Jesus "El Huevo" Hernandez bringing the energy level onstage to a fever pitch. I have to say, it really is a privilege to be a member of this band: some really wonderful people who love making music and having fun, too.

We hope everyone enjoyed the show. Taro!

Our recent pair of performances at the 2006 Marfa Lights Festival were marked by the introduction of new keyboardist, Taro Gutierrez. If you were there, you heard... If you weren't there, have we got a surprise for you!

First though, we extend our best wishes to Terry Davidson, one our band's co-founders, in his new digs in seaside Corpus Christi. He now teaches in a local school district.

Terry was a fixture in west Texas music for over 20 years, both performing and teaching all over the Big Bend. Back in 2004, he and Tony Lujan had the idea of putting together a new band that would give both the opportunity to front a band of their own. Hence, The Resonators were formed, originally with only five members. Very soon thereafter, the band grew to six pieces, eventually reaching the current eight-member roster.

Even though The Resonators have had very good luck in building a fan base over the past two years, we're still a very young band. We hope this is just the beginning. Regardless, all past successes--and any that lie ahead--would not have been possible without Terry's guidance and patience. We'll miss you, man!

Looking for Terry's replacement, we crossed our fingers and hoped that we could convince long-time Ojinaga (Mexico) music "institution", Taro Gutierrez, to play. Taro's resume includes a full career as music teacher in Ojinaga, a post-retirement current position as mariachi director in the Presidio schools, and even a two-week playing engagement with Xavier Cugat in Las Vegas way back...

Taro currently has his own band in Ojinaga, Las Meras Cuerdas, so we're hoping we can juggle the schedule and keep him playing with us, too. But if hearing him play at Marfa Lights was any indication, ay caramba!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://resonatorsonline.blogspot.com/2006/09/terry-taro.html' title='Terry! Recently we hired Jesus "El Huevo" Hernandez to run sound for the band. This guy knows his stuff, period! In addition, Jesus already has extensive experience performing in other local bands, so it'd be no big surprise to find him up on stage at some point in the near future. We're glad to have you, Huevo! Also our Latin percussion position is cookin' again with Carlos Franco at the helm. Carlos was brought in top sub for Frank on a couple of gigs and the chemistry with the band was great. Carlos also has quite a bit of experience gigging in the Big Bend, so we're fortunate to have him with us.

Look for The Resonators at Railroad Blues on July 28th, then in Pecos on the 29th.

See you soon!

Independence weekend fun!

The Resonators will have two dates coming up this Fourth of July weekend:

If you're looking to escape that summer heat, then head out to Ft. The show will be primarily latin and rock-n-roll, but we plan on sprinkling in a few country tunes as well. Our show Saturday night was a blast. The music was spot on and the audience was rockin', making for one fun evening. As always, we want to thank everyone for turning out to party with us, making Alpine a premier locale for live music. And none of this would be the same if it weren't for Railroad Blues. Thanks, Richard, R.C., and staff.

On to the music. After a busy 2005, The Resonators have renewed our commitment to getting a varied mix of tunes on every new set-list. This requires a significant amount of rehearsal and preparation, but it all seemed to be worth it Saturday Night. New songs included covers of: Jungle Boogie (Kool and The Gang), Higher Ground (Stevie Wonder), Bap Bap (Bonerama), Watermelon Man (Mongo Santamaria), Money (pink Floyd), and Ano Viejo. In addition, we played Joe Q (our tribute to Kinky Friedman), and Que Onda, both Resonators originals.

Jerry Castellano, our auxiliary percussionist, has decided to retire from the group, and we will miss him. Jerry played with us for the last year and subbed for Frank on several occasions. Best wishes, Jerry!

Well if you read this far, then you are a fan! And if you like The Resonators, then you probably are an aficicionado of an eclectic mix of great music. No need to say anything more than this: ERIC JOHNSON... Yes, the Eric Johnson Band will be at Railroad Blues on Wednesday, March 29. Lucy and I got advance tickets for $15 apiece (tickets are $25 at the door). Come on, are we kidding? No way! Show starts at 9:00 PM. If you can make it, get yourself to Alpine for this one.

Thanks for stopping in to visit our blog. Marfa Lights...Were you there?

Wow, what fun we had this past Labor Day weekend!

It all started on Thursday at the Kinky Friedman campaign rally at The Railroad Blues where Jeffrow (Tull) Cowell, The Doodlin' Hogwallops, and The Resonators played to a large, enthusiastic crowd. Jeffrow got things started, performing several Kinky originals, then The Doodlin' Hogwallops played a short set of folk/country, leading up to Kinky's stump speech. The Hogwallops resumed their set afterwards, followed by a lengthy Resonator set closing out the evening. Good times don't get much better than that memorable Thursday evening in Alpine!

The Marfa Lights Festival evening entertainment might just as easily have been called "Dances With Rainshowers." Both nights were interrupted briefly by rains (rain is good in west Texas!), but both shows went right ahead. The Resonators played on Saturday to a large crowd, then turned the rest of the evening over to Romaldo y Estilo. At about that time the rains came, but neither the crowd or band were to be deterred, and Marfa danced well into the night.

Sunday's afternoon just about got washed away. The rains started at about 3:30 PM and didn't let up for two hours. The Resonators were scheduled to begin at 5:00 PM but were delayed until 7:00 PM. By that time many vendors and attendees had already called it a day, so the outlook for the rest of the festival was uncertain. Suffice it to say, The Resonators brought the street dance back to life with a five-hour performance, filling in for the band which had originally been booked for the 9:00 PM dance. By evening's end, it seemed like Marfa had put on yet another successful Marfa Lights Festival and The Resonators were right there onstage to give everyone a rousing send-off.

Thanks, Marfa. Hopefully we'll see you again next year.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://resonatorsonline.blogspot.com/2005/09/kinky-friedman-marfa-lightswere-you.html' title='Kinky Friedman. Well it's June and time for some summer fun. Be sure to set aside at least a day or two (more, if possible), get out of town and turn off that cell phone!

If your travels lead you to Alpine, Texas on July 4th, then stop by Kokernot Park that evening for some great family entertainment. The Resonators will perform, along with the Alpine Community Band, culminating with fireworks after dark. It's all free, too!

We'll also be playing a free concert at the gazebo in front of the Brewster County Courthouse in early August, so stay tuned for specifics coming up.

Another place we love to play is Terlingua. We're working on setting up a Sunday July 3rd performance down there. Check back for developments on this possible gig. Would be a fun time to play for the music-loving, dance-loving folks in South Brewster County.

Take care.

Marfa Lights Festival adds Resonators for Sunday evening dance

Hey Marfa Lights Festival fans, we are excited to be playing this year's event on both Saturday afternoon and Sunday evening. We originally were only booked for Saturday, but today we were asked to play Sunday evening, too. Awesome! The Marfa Lights Festival is one of the top area events, both in terms of attendance and the quality of the festival itself. We are honored and grateful for the consideration.
